Pelosi's evidence of opposition to health care plan "carrying Swastikas"

Yesterday I pointed to Nancy Pelosi's claim that those protesting health care plan of "carrying Swastikas and symbols like that." Well, I contacted Pelosi's office about their evidence of these people "carrying Swastikas." Surely the implication is that those opposing the Democrats health care plan are Nazis. Nadeam Elshami, a spokesperson for Pelosi's congressional office, told me on Thursday that they had one picture of someone carrying a sign. See this:

Note this is not a pro-Swastika sign. It is a ban Swastika sign. I emailed Mr. Elshami about this inconsistency, but I received no further response. I wouldn't have used this sign myself and, while I understand people's fear about what is happening to health care, I think that such a sign is a mistake.

Obviously, Pelosi's claim makes it sound as if the signs are common -- a picture of one sign doesn't make it common. More importantly, if Pelosi had said that people were ""carrying anti-Swastika signs," what would have been the response to that?

Thanks, John.

It's outrageous enough that Pelosi would damn-by-association those of us who oppose the health care legislation etc. simply because some wingnut showed up with a pro-Nazi symbol . . . but to damn us on the basis of an anti-Nazi symbol is just beyond belief.

It doesn't often happen, but words absolutely fail me.

The anti-war protests displayed plenty of swastikas! And let's not mention pictures of Bush with a h=Hitler mustache, or the devil's horns, or any number of visual insults.

I didn't hear him whining about it.

Ok, so who voted the idiots into office?

We blog about our elected offals, yet they seem to remain in office. Perhaps Pelosi should be made into an example of why we should vote out an individual who lacks the common sense to correctly identify an "anti-Swastika" symbol and has the gall to pass it off as a symbol of "pro-NAZI".

We keep watching these idiots lie in such a blatant fashion, and we sit back and do nothing on election day?

I for one hope that folks in California get a clue, and vote Pelosi out!

I'm more concerned about the Stasi-like report-thy-neighbor environment the Administration is setting up than the anti-Nazi signs. We should all be concerned about ramming through plans where details can be ignored and filled in later, as Secretary Sebelius has stated--basically,"don't worry about the details--just pass the health plan and we'll fill the details in later. We're too busy to get the thing passed to worry about the details."

Hmm

You think her point might have been that the anti-healthcare reform people are so rabid that they compare healthcare reform to national-socialism?Thus the anti-nazi sign is an indication the anti-reform people are branding Pelosi's point of view as fascist. Her point seems quite ordinary to me. What's the problem?

Dear Matthew:

1) As a minor aside, the National Socialist party did introduce socialist health care into Germany.

2) Pelosi's statement seem to be claiming that the pro-freedom people are Nazis. I don't see how you get that she was claiming that the pro-freedom people were claiming she was supporting state socialism from her statement, though I would agree that would make more sense.

3) Democratic members of congress (not just one person in one of many crowds) have called Republicans facists. That seems much worse. Right? Did Pelosi say anything about her fellow congressmen then? No.

4) They said that they knew of one example by Thursday. I am taking them at their word that this picture is from one of the town hall rallies, but even so that doesn't make the plural she claimed.

To engage in idealogy of the type that Nancy Pelosi does, is to discard logic and reasoning, for idealogy crumbles in the face of truth.

I find it interesting to see that we do have folks here who are aware of history, and it's impact on social issues such as we face today.

cbanr notes the GDR's Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (Ministry for State Security)or Stasi, and the parallels between what it did, and what the WH has asked U.S. Citizens to do.

Dr. Lott correctly points out that the NSDAP instituted Socialised medicine during the reign of the Third Reich.

Perhaps the "Anti-Swastika" sign was simply a means to point out a peroid in history when a government out of control imposed it's idealogy on the citizens.

After all, our elected offals seem to dismiss us as uneducated fools. 2010 just may reverse that ignorance. Then again it may not.

Sure, NOW she has a problem with protesters marching with swastikas and comparing a sitting US president to Adolf Hitler.
